1 Background<\/a><\/h1>\n\n\n\n

In Zambia, the water crisis is not a set of statistics. It\u2019s a daily reality that shapes the lives of millions. And it\u2019s not just about adequate access to water. It\u2019s about access to clean water, which impacts health, education, commerce, and future opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The World Bank reports that only two-thirds of Zambians have adequate access to clean water. And this figure drops significantly in rural areas, where the infrastructure to supply clean water is likely either inadequate or non-existent. In these rural areas, the daily routine for many people revolves around water collection. And because adults must work tirelessly to try to meet their family\u2019s most basic needs, the chore of water collection often falls to the children. Some may start their day before sunrise to embark on an hours-long journey to the nearest water source. Often, this source is an untreated river or open well, neither of which reliably provides clean, safe water. The water they collect can often be filled with pollutants and bacteria, posing serious health risks. And with no other water collection options available, this painstaking chore can deprive children of the time they would otherwise be able to spend in school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is against the above background that the Mama Tandy foundation, would like to initiate a water project together with preventative and rehabilitative psychosocial interventions that involve reducing the extent of suffering; and helping the youths with psychosocial problems due to having nothing to do. Mama Tandy foundation would like to empower communities to become the architects of their own future through community-led collaboration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2\tStrategy<\/a><\/h1>\n\n\n\n

2.1\tCore principles and principles of the foundation<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

  1. The foundation's main objective is to strengthen the capacity of civil society in Zambia and to assist in the provision of healthy drinking water, sanitation and irrigation. A secondary aim is to improve the well-being and provision of education to the poorest and most marginalized children in rural Zambia, and to provide ongoing family and community-based psychosocial interventions for the care and protection of the young people.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. The foundation also aims to perform all further actions that are related to the aforementioned purpose in the broadest sense or that can be conducive to it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. The foundation tries to achieve its goal, among other things, by drilling water wells and installing irrigation systems.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. The foundation is not aiming to make profit.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    2.2\tApproach<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    To achieve the intended project goals and specific objectives, the Mama Tandy Foundation uses the following approach:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. Involvement of the communities and beneficiaries; Participatory planning, implementation and impact monitoring by all stakeholders will be encouraged.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    2. Improving family and community relationships and strengthen follow up support and referral mechanisms.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    3. Capacity building of the family and local community structures through interventions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    4. Collaboration with other already existing key players in this project community; Religious institutions, civil society organizations, schools and NGOs for purposes of experience sharing, networking with child focused institutions and schools through experience, information sharing, exposure visits and exchange programs and of course seeking technical support front he city council, ministry social welfare and water development.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    5. Provide all dimensions of the youth\u2019s developmental needs; health, education, emotional and behavioral development, identity, family and social relationships, social presentation and self-care skills. The foundation will also run a center, where much attention will be paid to the liberal art\u2019s pedagogical methodology. This means working with the more arts-oriented resources such as sport, drama, music, handcrafts and sewing activities for the girls.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    6. Provide information about proper use of HIV medication, good nutrition and staying active<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      3.1\tActivities of the foundation<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      The foundation's activities include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      1. Recruiting funds and volunteers<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      2. Promotion of the foundation and its goals<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      3. Planning and implementation of projects<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

        3.2\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Future projects by the foundation<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

        The following projects are planned first:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        1. Bore holes in the Chongwe area<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

          Chongwe (a district approximately 40 km from the Zambian capital Lusaka) has been severely affected by the drought of recent years. Wells will be constructed in 10 villages in this district for irrigation of agricultural land and drinking water for residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
